Can Acupuncture Help With Migraines? What the Research Shows

February 23, 2026 · 4 min read

Migraines are more than bad headaches. They can be debilitating — causing throbbing pain, nausea, light sensitivity, and sometimes hours or days of lost productivity. Over 39 million Americans live with migraines, and many find that conventional medications provide incomplete relief or come with unwanted side effects. That's why a growing number of patients are turning to acupuncture.

What the Research Says

Acupuncture for migraines isn't just folk wisdom — it's supported by a substantial body of clinical research. A large-scale review published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, one of the most respected sources of evidence-based medicine, found that acupuncture is at least as effective as preventive drug treatments for migraines, with fewer side effects.

The review analyzed data from dozens of randomized controlled trials involving thousands of patients. The researchers concluded that adding acupuncture to standard care reduced the frequency of migraine episodes and that its effects lasted well beyond the treatment period.

Another study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that patients receiving acupuncture experienced significantly fewer migraine days per month compared to those receiving sham (placebo) acupuncture or no treatment. These results held up over a 24-week follow-up period, suggesting that acupuncture doesn't just provide temporary relief — it can produce lasting changes.

How Acupuncture Works for Migraines

From a Western medical perspective, acupuncture appears to work on migraines through several mechanisms. It stimulates the nervous system to release endorphins and other natural pain-modulating chemicals. It reduces inflammation and improves blood flow. And it appears to regulate the activity of pain-processing regions in the brain.

From the perspective of Oriental medicine, migraines are often related to imbalances in the liver meridian, blood stagnation, or the effects of external factors like wind and stress on the body's energy flow. Your practitioner will assess your specific pattern and design a treatment plan that addresses the root cause — not just the pain.

This is one of the key differences between acupuncture and conventional migraine treatment. While medications typically target symptoms, acupuncture aims to correct the underlying imbalance that's triggering the migraines in the first place.

What a Migraine Treatment Looks Like at Wongu

At Wongu Health Center, migraine treatment begins with a thorough evaluation. Your practitioner will ask about the location, frequency, and quality of your headaches, as well as related symptoms like neck tension, sleep quality, stress levels, and digestive health. Tongue and pulse diagnosis help identify the specific pattern driving your migraines.

Treatment typically involves needles placed at points on the head, neck, hands, and feet. Many patients are surprised that the most effective acupuncture points for headaches are often located far from the head itself — for example, a point between the thumb and index finger called LI-4 (Hegu) is one of the most commonly used points for headache relief in Oriental medicine.

Depending on your presentation, your practitioner may also incorporate cupping on the upper back and neck to release muscle tension that contributes to migraines, or prescribe a custom herbal formula to support your treatment between sessions.

How Many Sessions Does It Take?

Every patient is different, but most migraine patients begin to notice improvements within 4–6 sessions. For chronic migraines, a typical initial treatment plan involves weekly sessions for 6–8 weeks, then gradually spacing appointments further apart as symptoms improve.

Many patients continue with monthly maintenance sessions after their migraines are under control to prevent recurrence. The goal is to get you to a place where you're experiencing fewer and less severe episodes — and eventually, where migraines are no longer controlling your life.

Is Acupuncture Right for Your Migraines?

Acupuncture can be used as a standalone treatment or alongside your current migraine medications. It's safe, drug-free, and has minimal side effects. Many patients find that acupuncture allows them to gradually reduce their reliance on medication over time.

At Wongu Health Center, we treat migraines at both the intern level ($80 initial visit) and with our licensed OMDs ($120 initial visit). Both options include a full evaluation and treatment, and all intern sessions are directly supervised by a licensed OMD.
